What Is Life Coaching?
Frankly, I'm not a fan of the term "life coaching." It has already gained way too much baggage and connotation in the last 5 or 10 years, and it's still a field that's trying to find itself. Not to mention the fact that every coach you might meet will probably have a different focus, approach, temperament, personality, and set of beliefs.
I actually prefer terms like "personal consultant", "individual business partner", "change artist", or maybe even "smart, capable, experienced, intuitive, neutral, friendly person who enjoys helping people." Or whatever you choose to call me—what I can do for you doesn't depend on what you call me or other coaches.
When it comes down to it, despite branching specialities, competing certification programs, and myriad new techniques appearing all the time, life coaches have been around for as long as humanity has formed communities. A life coach is someone who can listen to anything you have to say with a smile. A life coach is someone who you can feel safe around no matter what's going on in your life. A life coach is someone who will tell you exactly what you need to hear—which is not always what you want to hear. And a life coach is someone who can guide you on your next steps in life.
How is Coaching different from Therapy?
Life coaching is NOT counseling, psychiatry, psychoanalysis, cognitive behavioral therapy, or "shrinking"—all of which can be helpful and complementary, though! Each of those professions are excellent at analyzing and healing the issues and wounds of the past. What life coaching can do for you is to help you be the best You possible in the present, and to help you discover and move toward your goals for the future.
But what I am is someone who can hear what you have to say, and give you nonjugmental, completely honest feedback. I'm someone who can love and accept you no matter what you're feeling in the moment. I'm someone who's disarming and safe. I'm someone who's vulnerable and understanding, because I'm walking my own path in life as well. I'm also someone who can help you dream up tremendous goals, break them down into manageable steps, and work with you on a practical plan to meet your dreams.
While goalsetting is a practical matter, to me it clearly fits within the fold of Life Coaching. It is one of the most powerful tools we all have at our disposal. The act of simply thinking about possibilities and then writing down goals can be enough to alter your life for the better. Both small, short term, realistic goals and big, long term dreams are equally important, and I can work with you to visualize and verbalize everything that you wish to accomplish and experience.
Life has a tendency to trip us all up every once in a while with unimagined obstacles. Knowing that, I can work with you to not only minimize the pain we all feel when we hit bumps in the road, but also to set you up with the tools and skills to lift yourself right back up and keep going when you do fall. We all need reminders of what we already know sometimes, so I can be an alarm clock for you right now, and I can give you the tools to remind yourself of your own greatness when the going gets tough.
